India suffered a defeat against England in the first Test at Headingley, where the home team successfully chased a daunting target of 371 runs. This loss has led to scrutiny over Shubman Gill's leadership, as several cricket analysts have raised concerns regarding his captaincy. At just 25 years old, Gill took on the role of Test captain following Rohit Sharma's retirement announcement.
Former Indian pacer Irfan Pathan has called for patience, emphasizing the challenges that come with captaincy. He pointed out that Gill needs time to adapt to his new responsibilities and to establish himself in this role.
Pathan stated, "There has been a lot of discussion about his captaincy and the bowling changes. We must allow him time. He is a new captain leading a team in transition. He is missing key players like Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma in the dressing room."
He further explained, "Bumrah won't be available for every match, which limits his options. Leading a team for the first time on such a challenging tour in England is no easy feat. Few teams, including India, perform exceptionally well in England. Captaining in such conditions for the first time can lead to mistakes during these five-day matches."
Pathan also addressed concerns about Gill's authority, suggesting that it will develop over time. He noted that Gill's recent century will help boost his confidence regarding his form.
He concluded, "Once he is assured of his form, he will be better positioned to make difficult decisions."
India's next challenge will be the second Test against England at Edgbaston, starting on July 2.
